Control Room "A", featuring a custom Neve 6235 Console
and a Studer A-827 2" 24-Track
Welcome to The Saltmine Studio Oasis in Mesa, Arizona.  At an average 71°, The Saltmine is the coolest studio in the Arizona desert, offering a great creative atmosphere, a wealth of both vintage and modern equipment, and a dedicated and talented staff.

The Saltmine has been the favorite studio of many local artists for more than 15 years, and in that time has become popular as a recording hideaway for visiting recording artists and producers as well.

Our new studio facility in the arts district of downtown Mesa offers three recording studios, three practice spaces, and an outdoor stage and private courtyard.

On the left is a view of the control room in Studio A.  In the foreground is the 12-channel Neve Melborn Sidecar, next to the 36-Channel Neve 6235 console which adds up to an awe inspiring 48 channels of all-discrete classic Neve channels.  Both the main console and the Melborn have just been completely "recapped" and had their power supplies upgraded and they sound amazing.  In addition to the neves, there is a wealth of classic and modern outboard gear, including Distressors, Pultecs, 1176's etc.

In the rear you can see the Studer A-827 24 Track 2" tape recorder and the Otari MTR-12 1/2" 2-track mixdown deck.  Click the picture to see a larger view.  The Pro Tools HD system and Macintosh G5 are in a separate machine room behind the control room.  This Pro Tools HD 3/Accel system has 32 I/0's on Digidesign 192 interfaces with a Sync I/O, blackburst generator, Lynx II synchronizer and about 1.5 Terabytes of hard disk space.  All computers in the facility are networked together for easy file transfer.

Control Room A currently features Mackie SA-1532z active Mains with Mackie SWA-1801z Subwoofers for 4200 watts of playback fury.  This room also houses our Dynaudio M3 Active monitors driven by Chevin Research A-2000 power amps (3000 watts total!) and a pair Genelec 1030A's, Yamaha NS-10's with various power amplifiers available including Bryston, BGW, Crown, Hafler etc.

Control Room B, featuring an SSL 6000 E/G+ Console with Total Recall

Studio B's control room features a 128 input SSL 6064 E/G+ Console and customized active Westlake BBSM-15T Main monitors with 16" TAD Drivers, a Bryston 4b amplifier on Top, a Bryston 14b on the 16" woofers, and a Crown 3600 on the Pressure Head 18" Subs, crossed over with Bryston active crossovers.

This room features a Pro Tools HD3 Accel system
on a Macintosh G5/ dual 2 GHz with 64 Outputs, 48 on 3 192kHz interfaces, and 16 on an Apogee DA-16x.  The system is clocked with an Apogee Big Ben master clock and also includes an Apogee Rosetta 200 AD/DA interface.

This room also has a pair of vintage Neve 1064's, GML 8200 Parametric EQ, 2 API 500 series Lunchboxes, 4 vintage Pultec EQ's, 6 Distressors, a Lexicon 480L, an AMS RMX 16 with a remote, a Neve 5432 sidecar and lots of other cool and unusual outboard gear.  This control room is the same size as Control room A and has an iso room which is about 12'x14' with a 14' ceiling, with a Clearsonic vocal iso booth.

Studio B also features our ATR-102 1" analog master tape recorder.  This is the finest analog recorder in the world, one of about 50 in existence!

In addition to the Westlakes, Control Room "B" features Yamaha NS-10m's powered by a Bryston 3B amplifer,  Genelec 1030A, Hafler TRM-8, and KRK V6 or 7000 Monitor speakers.  Other amplifiers and speakers are available upon request.

This is a picture of the drum room in Studio A, showing the doors into Iso rooms 1 and 2 and the window into Control Room A.  Our DW drum kit is in the foreground.

With 24' high cathedral ceilings and a maple floor, this room makes for an enormous live drum sound.  The block wall and heavy oriental rugs on the walls add to its character.  We have ASC tube traps and various baffles available for diffusion and isolation but this room's natural ambience has brought a smile to every drummer who has recorded in here.

Over the drum set you can see a Neumann SM-69 stereo tube mic, and next to the Vox AC-30 and Fender Pro Reverb amps there is a Neumann U-67 Tube mic in position as one of the room mics.  These are just two of over 100 sought-after classic microphones in The Saltmine's microphone locker.

Click on the picture for a better view.

Studio"A" has a roughly 28'x30' live room with cathedral ceilings,  maple wood floor, natural light and a great vibe.

Beware of the Mummy

To the left is a picture of the Egyptian sarcophagus which guards our Pro Tools machine room and welcomes guests to the hallway.  Don Salter, the studio owner, has quite a collection of Egyptian art and has several interesting pieces like this throughout the studio, including some amazing photos of the pyramids which he took when he was in Egypt.

On the right  is a view of Studio A's Isolation room #3 which doubles as a guitar amp locker.  You can see a few of the amplifiers that we keep on hand which nicely complement the classic guitars from our collection of over 50 world-class instruments.

This room is about 12'x12' with a 16' ceiling and is big enough to set up a drum kit if you want a more intimate "dry" sound than our large drum room has to offer.  We use it mostly for vocals, acoustic guitar and guitar/bass amplifiers.

Studio A also offers a Mytek Private Cue headphone system, which allows musicians to control the "more me" knob in style.  This is the most widely regarded professional headphone system in the world and features class A power amplifiers for pure, awesome sound from whisper quiet to ear-cooking...

Studio A Isolation Room 3

With the move to the new facility in 2003 we saw the addition of a third studio, which is smaller and more economical than the other two rooms.

Studio C features a Dual 2.5 GHz Macintosh G5 with a Digidesign 003, Protools 7.3 and Reason.

Centered around Mackie D8B Digital Mixer and two Focusrite ISA 430 "Producer Pack" channel strips, this studio is a great overdub or editing room to supplement your work in our other studios.

It's also a great place to produce music or write lyrics while other members of your team are working in the other studios.

Studio C also has a (very!) small isolation booth for tracking vocals, guitars, and percussion.

Studio C is our smallest studio, for production and writing

Studio D "The Villa" is our newest studio, more to come...

We celebrated New Year's 2009 by christening our new Studio D "The Villa" which features a 112-input SSL 4056 console and a Pro Tools HD3 Accel with 24 i/o on a dual 2.7 gHz Macintosh G5 and a 50" plasma display!

This studio is set up as a recording "retreat" with a full kitchen, sleeping accommodations and a spacious lounge/practice space with a full PA and projection TV.

This is a smaller studio than our main Studios A and B but is set up to facilitate the recording and mixing of an entire record for a band or hip hop artist who wants to "woodshed" at the studio and stay for weeks at a time.

It is also available hourly or daily in between lockout sessions.

One important aspect of life at the studio is a place for guests and musicians to relax when they have a break, and at The Saltmine there are plenty spaces to relax and watch TV or to get some business taken care of, etc.

Each control room has a TV monitor, which offers clients a view of any of the recording rooms via closed circuit television cameras.  There is a camera in each control room, and several cameras at various useful positions throughout the facility.  We also offer a high speed wireless internet connection so you can check your email, etc.

We have a comfortable lounge with a full kitchen, Big Screen Satellite HDTV, DVD, XBOX 360 and Playstation 2, located centrally in the studio, the backstage patio lounge and VIP room, and the front courtyard which has a basketball hoop and "metro golf" course.

Our backstage patio lounge also features a restaurant-style barbecue grill which has been known to make the most amazing Philly cheese steak or chicken sandwiches on the face of the earth.   Don't take our word for it, ask anyone in the hip hop community about these sandwiches, they are legendary!

Our Private VIP Lounge aka. "The Dog House", all the comforts of home!
Big Screen satellite TV, leather couches, king size bed, a killer stereo, a full bathroom and a kitchen!

Our patio areas offer a great deal of comfort and privacy, and the beautiful weather has been treating us well lately with several games of Metro Golf and one-on-one basketball, what is starting to seem like daily barbecues, some soccer, frisbee, hackey-sack, etc.  A couple minutes outside doing something like this once in awhile is a nice breather during a 12+ hour day in the studio.

You can see the stage in this picture, which can be wired to Control Room A for live recordings.  Since this picture was taken we have added a gorgeous aluminum lighting grid custom made by Mike Brown, which can been seen in the pictures of our concerts.  The courtyard is wired for sound with a console at standard house position and there is room on stage or side stage for a monitor console.

Arizona's beautiful weather helps to make the Saltmine a perfect studio retreat from those cold winter months up north.  You won't miss the snow while sunbathing in our courtyard in January while working on your record.

Plenty of secure free parking in our courtyard for your toys! The more the merrier!

The Saltmine's immediate vicinity offers a variety of metropolitan and natural backgrounds for personal retreats and photo shoots, and visits to Arizona's nearby legendary mountains, rivers, lakes, golf courses and wildlife parks offer inspirational views and experiences like no other place on earth.

The city of Mesa, and Phoenix's "Valley of the Sun" offer everything you've come to expect from a sprawling desert city, including everything from five-star hotels and restaurants to mountain biking trails and lonely little places in the middle of nowhere.

The city of Tempe, only five minutes  from the Saltmine, is the location of Arizona State University and is the hub of the Valley's music scene.  You can catch a concert nearby in one of many local venues, or find a place featuring some of Arizona's best talent.
